The Insightful Aeging Process

WE all  accept that getting older is inevitable, and now leading clinicians have revealed the exact age when different body parts start to decline, most alarming being the brain and lungs.
French doctors have found that the quality of men's' sperm starts to deteriorate  by 35, so that by the time a man is 45 a third of pregnancies end in miscarriage.

Here, with the help of leading clinicians, Angela Epstein tells the ages when different parts of the body start to lose their battle with time.
BRAIN -  Starts ageing at 20.
As we get older, the number of nerve  cells - or neurons - in the brain decrease.
We start with around 100  billion, but in our 20s this number starts to decline.
By 40, we could  be losing up to 10,000 per day, affecting  memory, co-ordination and brain function.

GUT -  Starts ageing at 55.
A healthy gut has a good balance between harmful  and 'friendly' bacteria.
But, levels of friendly bacteria in the gut drop significantly after 55, particularly in the large intestine, says Tom  MacDonald, Professor of Immunology at Barts and The London Medical  School.
As a result, we suffer from poor digestion and an increased risk of gut disease.
Constipation is more likely as we age, as the flow of digestive juices from the stomach, liver, pancreas and small intestine slows  down.
BREASTS -  Start ageing at 35.
BY their mid-30s, women's breasts start losing  tissue and fat,  reducing size and fullness.
Sagging starts properly at 40 and the  areola (the area surrounding the nipple) can shrink considerably.
BLADDER -  Starts ageing at 65.
Loss of bladder control is more likely when you hit 65.
Women are more vulnerable to bladder problems as, after the  menopause, declining estrogen levels make tissues in the urethra - the  tube through which  urine passes - thinner and weaker, reducing bladder support.
Bladder  capacity in an older adult generally is about half that of a younger person - about two cups in a  30-year-old and one cup in a 70-year-old. ....

LUNGS -  Start ageing at 20.
Lung capacity slowly starts to  decrease from the  age of 20.
By the age of 40, some people are already experiencing breathlessness.
This is partly because the muscles and the rib cage which control breathing stiffen up.

VOICE -  Starts ageing at 65.
Our voices become quieter and hoarser with age.
The  soft tissues in the voice box (larynx) weaken, affecting the pitch,  loudness and quality of the voice.
A woman's voice may become huskier  and lower in pitch, whereas a man's might become thinner and higher.
EYES  -  Start ageing at 40.
Glasses are the norm for many over-40s as  failing eyesight kicks in - usually long-sightedness, affecting our  ability to see objects up close.
HEART  - Starts ageing at  40.
The heart pumps blood less  effectively around the  body as we get older.
This is because blood vessels become less elastic, while arteries can harden or become blocked because of fatty deposits forming on the coronary arteries - caused by eating too much saturated fat.
The blood  supply to the heart is then reduced, resulting in painful angina.
Men  over 45 and women over 55 are  at greater risk of a heart attack.

LIVER -  Starts ageing at 70.
This is the only organ in the body  which seems to defy  the aging process. It is the most trust worthy of all our organs.(So do not damage it at least with your deliberate actions !)

KIDNEYS -  Starts ageing at 50.
With kidneys, the number of filtering units (nephrons) that remove waste from the bloodstream starts to reduce in  middle age.
PROSTATE  -  Starts ageing at 50.
The prostate often becomes enlarged with  age, leading to  problems such as increased need to urinate, says Professor Roger Kirby,  director of the Prostate Centre in London .
This is known as benign  prostatic hyperplasia  and affects half of men over 50, but rarely those under 40.

It occurs  when the prostate absorbs large amounts of the male sex hormone  testosterone, which increases the  growth of cells in the prostate.
A normal prostate is the size of a  walnut, but the condition can increase this to the size of a tangerine.
BONES  - Start ageing at 35.
'Throughout our life, old bone  is broken down  by cells called osteoclasts and replaced by bone-building cells called  osteoblasts - a process called bone turnover,' explains Robert Moots,  Professor of  Rheumatology at Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool .
Children's  bone growth is rapid - the skeleton takes just two years to  renew
Itself completely.
In adults, this can take  ten years.
Until our mid-20s, bone density is still increasing.
But at 35 bone loss begins as part of the natural ageing process.

TEETH  - Start ageing at 40.
As we age, we produce less  saliva, which washes  away bacteria, so teeth and gums are more vulnerable to decay. Receding  gums - when tissue is lost from gums around the teeth - is common in adults over 40.
MUSCLES  - Start ageing  at 30.
Muscle is constantly being built up and broken down,  a process which is well balanced in young adults.
However, by the time  we're 30, breakdown is greater than buildup, explains Professor Robert  Moots.
Once  adults reach 40, they start to lose between 0.5 and 02 per cent of their muscle each year.
Regular exercise can help prevent  this.

HEARING -  Starts ageing mid-50s.
More than half of people over 60 lose  hearing because of their age, according to the Royal National  Institute for the Deaf.
SKIN - Starts ageing mid-20s.
The skin  starts to age naturally in your  mid-20s.
TASTE  AND SMELL -  Start ageing at 60.
We start out in life with about 10,000  taste buds  scattered on the tongue.
This number can halve later  in life.
After we turn 60, taste and smell gradually decline, partly as  a result of the normal ageing process.
FERTILITY -  Starts ageing at 35.
Female fertility begins to decline after  35, as the number  and quality of eggs in the ovaries start to fall.
The lining of the womb  may become thinner, making it less likely for a fertilised egg to take, and also creating an environment  hostile to sperm.

HAIR -  Starts ageing at 30.
Male hair loss usually begins in the 30s. Hair is  made in tiny pouches  just under the skin's surface, known as follices. A hair normally grows  from each follicle for about three years, is then shed, and a new hair  grows.
Most people  will have some grey hair by the age of 35.
When we are young, our hair  is coloured by the pigments produced by cells in the hair follicle  known as melanocytes.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message.

Morning everybody :)

Every woman has 22 useless items in her closet

The time has come for ladies (and men) to clean our their cupboards.
We all have secrets and somehow closet belongings seem to be the most coveted of them all.
You know what we’re talking about, it’s that jacket your high school crush gave you on Valentines Day but is four sizes too big, those impractical boots you just had to have but could never wear because it’s just not that cold in Karachi, the pair of flips flops you fell in love with at Liberty but knew you would never wear, that funky looking shirt you thought would make a statement and last but not least that one pair of jeans that you refuse to part with because you believe that one day you will fit into them again.
According to the Daily Mail, every woman has at least 22 items in her closet she never wears but refuses to throw out.
In Britain, women spend more than 1.6 billion pounds ($2.5 billion) on more than 500 million items of clothing they will never wear. Placed on a clothes rail, the unworn clothes would stretch to 25,000 kilometres, equivalent to four-and-a-half times the distance between London and New York. Millions of purchases that seemed to be a good idea in the shop — whether they were a bargain or a design worn by a celebrity — have turned out to be a complete and utter waste.
Rash buys are the main reason for the unworn clothing pile-up, according to 45 per cent of the women questioned. Just one in eight women regularly clear out their wardrobes, while one in 50 delay the dreaded cleaning day for at least 10 years. On further research, it was found that jeans are the most common item in unworn clothes, with 88 per cent saying they own at least one pair that they would never be seen wearing for a various number of reasons.
Statistics prove that one in five women hoard up to six pairs of shoes that will never be worn. And almost everyone owns at least one top they just had to have but would never be seen dead wearing it.
Ironically, more than half of the women say that the guilt of wasting money keeps them from throwing out unwanted clothes. Some 17 per cent of the female population hoard particular styles and make irrational choices by pinning hopes on a fashion revival.
However, let’s not discriminate too much as men are not much better; research proves that men have at least 19 items of unworn clothing lurking around in their wardrobes and more than a third of them admit that their unworn items are largely sales buys.
Sue Leeson, a spokesman for shopping channel QVC, which carried out the survey, said: “Hoarding clothes is a form of nostalgia — but it’s impractical. Finding out what you have already means that you can become a smart shopper and focus on your wardrobe, buying key pieces that coordinate so that you can pull together unique and trendy ensembles.”
Ladies the time has come! It’s time to beat men to the race, and clean out our closets: it’s time to gear up, be realistic, be smart and most of all be patient as you browse through years of pending give-away. So brace yourselves and every time you hold on to something relentlessly or try tracing an emotional attachment to something, let your practicality kick in and maybe sometime in the future you can buy new collectibles to relish but until then let go of the obsolete and move.

Interesting Science Facts You Maybe Don't Know

It's time to refresh our brains with another list of fascinating factlets. These mini-facts are all science based and should be news to some readers.

1. Raindrops are not shaped like a teardrop (as they are almost always depicted in drawings) – they are actually spherical.

2. When something "sublimes" it turns directly into a gas from a solid – bypassing the liquid state. This is what would happen if you throw dry-ice into a fire.

3. Gorillas sleep in nests – they weave together soft foliage and bent branches from trees. Males tend to like sleeping on the ground while females like to have their nests in trees.

4. Champagne doesn't fizz because of carbon dioxide – it fizzes because of dirt or dust. In a completely smooth glass with no dust molecules in it, champagne would be completely still.

5. Most digestion occurs, not in the stomach, but in the small intestine. This may be the reason that a person can be bulimic whilst still staying fat.

6. The red juice that comes out of rare steak is not blood – it is myoglobin a close relative of blood. Almost all the blood has been removed from a steak by the time it hits the market.

7. Plastic bags are better than paper bags for the environment. The manufacturing process that makes paper bags requires far more energy than that which produces plastic. Recycling paper bags takes more energy than recycling plastic, and paper bags take up more space in a landfill. Because landfills are usually airtight beneath the surface, paper and plastic are equally bad at biodegrading.

8. Polar bears are fascinating creatures. Their fur is transparent (not white), their skin is black (not white), and when kept in warm humid environments, their fur can turn green from algae.

9. Pet allergies are usually not allergies to fur but allergies to the animal's dead skin, saliva, or waste matter. Regularly cleaning pets can dramatically reduce allergies.

10. The tongue map is a lie – you can taste all tastes on all parts of the tongue. The tongue map is derived from a discredited German paper from 1901.

11. When you hold a shell to your ear to hear the sea, the sound you hear is actually your own blood rushing through your veins! You can use any cup shaped object to hear this effect.

12. When you are alive, your brain is pink. When you die, it turns grey. While we describe the brain as "gray matter" and "white matter", this is not a true description of its color.

13. Mercury, the fascinating liquid metal is not the only liquid metal. Gallium is solid at room temperature but will melt if held in your hand, caesium (Cs), and francium (Fr) – the second rarest naturally occurring element, can also be liquid at or near room temperature.

14. Dolphins don't drink water – if they drank sea water it would make them ill and potentially kill them. They get all of their liquid needs through the foods they eat.

Key brain chemical that boosts memory found

London: Scientists have identified a brain chemical that appears to boost memory in rats, a discovery they claim could lead to new treatments for cognitive diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia.

A team researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York found that IGF-II, a molecule that occurs naturally in the human brain during memory formation, plays a key role in the laying down and the strengthening of memories.

The chemical is found in relatively high levels in the hippocampus - the brain's memory hub. However, its levels decline with age.

According to the researchers, learning more about how this chemical affects memory, could lead to new emory-boosting drugs for Alzheimer's, stroke and other conditions that rob people of their ability to remember even the simplest things.

The reverse, they said, may also be possible, with pills that wipe painful memories being used to help soldiers erase the horrors of battle, as well as those haunted by memories of car crashes and sufferers of crippling phobia, the Daily Mail reported.

For their research, the scientists gave mild electric shocks to rats when they entered the darker side of a box. As the rodents normally like shaded spots, any reluctance to re-enter the area was taken to mean they remembered the painful consequences.

So, the more the animal avoided the darkness, the better it was at remembering where not to go. Tests showed that levels of IGF-II rose as the animals learnt to avoid the dark spot - and that giving them an injection of the substance boosted memory even further.

New memories were strengthened and were slower to break down. In other words, the creatures found it harder to forget. Examination of the animals' brains reviled that IGF-II had strengthened the cellular connections and mechanisms underlying long-term memory, the researchers reported in the journal Nature.

Senior study author Cristina Alberini, a professor of neuroscience at Mount Sinai, said: "The implications of these data are far-reaching and give us new clues about how to investigate memory loss and forgetfulness in people with cognitive impairment, like those with Alzheimer's disease, stroke or dementia.
"This study is the first step to understanding the benefits of IGF-II. We have identified some of the mechanisms associated with this effect and look forward to studying them further and exploring the clinical relevance of IGF-II."

Other experiments also showed that blocking IGF-II stops long-lasting memories from forming, a finding researchers said could also lead to drugs that could erase bad memories - a process known to medics as extinction.

Believe it or not

"I tell you, I knew my morning wasn't going right. When I put on my shirt the button fell off, when I picked up my briefcase, the handle fell off, I tell ya, I was afraid to go to the bathroom."
Well I am here now.. :) Morning everybody

5 Types of people who are disgracing entrepreneurship.

1. “I am thinking about starting up for last 3 years” types
These are the type of people who you will find in most of the networking events and they have only 1 cap on – “THINKING” cap. Every time you talk to them, they will tell you about a great startup (which maybe in news for funding, product, consumers etc.) and say, “You know, I had thought about this idea 3 years back! But the problem is … (some explanation about why this will not work or why they didn’t do it)”. A real potential entrepreneur would have already met potential customers, team members and investors and taken off in some ways by this time.
Lesson – Thinking is good, but doing is better
2. “I have got this great idea, but I cannot share with you” types
There are some types of people who take literal meaning from “Power of Ideas” – they think that idea is only thing that is holding them from their next IPO (initial public offering), and because they have a great idea, customers will be lining up after them. Nowadays, customers are smart to understand who promises and who delivers – they pay for performance, not for ideas. Some of them are even smart enough to copy other ideas from Techcrunch, Demo sites and claim to be their “original” ideas.
Lesson – Ideas are everywhere, but he who brings a product for the customer makes the money.
3. “I don’t like my job, so I want to become an entrepreneur” types
If you don’t like your job, then change your job. If you don’t like your industry, then change the industry. But who says that being an entrepreneur is better or worse than a job. In fact, its multiple jobs rolled into one – you have to get customers, arrange for money, use it efficiently and manage a team all at the same time!
Lesson – Entrepreneurs need ability and passion to start, not frustration.
4. “I want to make money” types
Yes, entrepreneurship is a lot about making money, but as Henry Ford said, “Any business that makes only money, is a poor business”. There will be days, especially early on in business, when you will not make any money. There will be days, maybe sometime later in business, when you will make so much money that you will not be able to count – you will have to get accountants, secretaries and professional bankers to do this for you.
Lesson – define few objectives with which you wish to start your venture, including personal, professional and financial ones.
5. “If I had the money, I would start my business” types
I come across this category of people every day, and their most common crib is about investors not giving them the money to start. When you probe them further, you come to realize that they are in a comfort zone of a monthly salary, set daily schedules, and weekend parties etc. There are no real attempts at trying to find customers, build a product, or even meet investors! They just read a newspaper or website and think what gets covered in media is really for real.
Lesson – Real entrepreneurship is about making sacrifices, and doing something to convert problems into opportunities, not complaining about someone else.
These are the few kinds who always crib, criticize or complain – the first thing that I do is avoid them, and find someone more helpful or positive in life. India does not need people who bring disgrace to entrepreneurship, but more people who can struggle, fight, and bring things to life!

Treat Employees Like They Are the Customer

“Treat your employees the way you want your customers treated – maybe even better!” Shep Hyken

The above quote is simply a line taken from one of my speeches. It is my customer service slant to the familiar Golden Rule – “Do unto others as you would do unto yourself.” Telling people how to treat customers is one thing. Showing how you want them treated is completely different – especially if you are modeling the behavior.

I received a case study written by Andrew Thomas, a freelance writer from Ohio. He wrote about global leadership and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel chain. There was something in the case study that jumped out at me, and it applies to the concept in the above quotation.

The Ritz-Carlton was hired to manage an existing hotel in Shanghai. They brought in many of their experts and determined that major renovations were needed. Their first phase of the renovation was the Employee Entrance. This may seem strange to most, but is the norm for the Ritz-Carlton. While the renovation was relatively inexpensive, it sent an important message to the employees (who were employed by the previous management company). It demonstrated that a new standard (higher) of quality and service was expected and that the employees were incredibly important to the process.

The Ritz-Carlton is recognized worldwide for being a quality organization. They understand the importance of outstanding customer service. Just as important, if not more so, is that they also understand the value of their employees, the internal customers.
